AC-OPERATION
Since the physical- and electrical operation of a
carbon arc- or a gas discharge ultraviolet radiator
was a polarity sensitive process, operation in an AC
environment required additional measures. One of
the options was to use a configuration with two
anodes, one active in the positive half of the
alternating current and one in the negative half.
Another solution was to use specially designed
electrodes that could operate both as a cathode and
as an anode, depending on the momentary polarity
of the voltage. Most carbon arc sunlamps and
mercury vapour discharge sunlamps operated
according this concept as well as all glow discharge
tube light sunlamps like the Dr. Kern sunlamp on
display here.
